Local news reports

A Haverhill man was arrested Monday after accidentally shooting his girlfriend in the leg.

Police responded Monday night after a report of a gunshot wound. When police responded, they found Joshua Thompson, 22, of Haverhill and a 19-year-old Plaistow woman with a gunshot wound to her leg.
“We believe it was an accidental discharge,” Deputy police Chief Kathleen Jones said. “He dropped it and it went off.”
Police charged Thompson with second-degree assault.
“In New Hampshire, recklessly causing injury to another by means of a dangerous weapon is means for assault,” Jones said. “He was being careless with the firearm.”

  1. Careless is too vague. Was he under the influence? Was he juggling with the gun? If it was a simple accident--and yes, accidents can happen--the charge is excessive.

    1. Dropping the salt shaker is a simple accident. Dropping a loaded gun which then discharges and injures someone is gross negligence. You don't want it to be, I know, for that eventual day when you do it. Or have you already?

    3. So it would be OK if he was under the influence (whatever that means)? It would be OK if he was juggling the gun? Just digging for non-facts to excuse this shooting. Typical criminal thinking. What excuse can be used to escape responsibility for this assault.

    4. Oh, I'm the child? You're just the one who keeps excusing negligence as accidents. That's mature.

    5. Mikeb, your childishness was in accusing me of negligence. It's a typical tactic of yours. Someone objects to your simple-minded views, and you enquire if the person has done something wrong.

Anonymous, looking into the details of a case does not equate to defending the people involved. I don't really expect you to understand the complexity of that.

    6. The police did that and charged him accordingly. Of course you know better than the police. The same criminal thinking that makes you think it's OK to go after a drug dealer (who did nothing to you) with your gun, instead of calling the police. proving again, your disdain for the law and taking the law into your own criminal hands.
