Supposed DGU in Wisconsin

Local news reports
"I heard somebody coming up the steps to my room and just kind of said, 'here goes nothing,'"the victim said.

She then grabbed her gun and her phone. As she was dialing 911, a masked intruder appeared who attempted to use a form of pepper spray on her. That’s when she fired several shots at the intruder, police said.

Investigators believe the intruder forced himself into the residence through a closed and secured window. They are confident he was trying to rob the house. The victim said he was successful in taking a few items.

Police said the intruder fled when those bullets were fired. After a canine search of the area, the man has not been located.

Sorry, I'm not buyin' it. For one thing, home invaders cannot silently enter a home through "a closed and secured window."

Secondly, and most importantly, if the guy was close enough to use pepper spray on her, she could not have fired several shots without hitting him. I don't care how bad a shot she is or how poorly trained, at close quarters like reported, he would have been a dead home invader.

So, I have major doubts as to the veracity of this report.

What about you?  How does it sound to you?

  1. There was a video (from a police cruiser)floating around some time ago that showed a shootout between the officer and the driver of a pickup truck that he had pulled over. I don't think there was more than a few feet between them, several shots fired, and no hits. Adrenaline will do crazy things to you, even to one of those "highly trained" troopers.

I am still trying to find that video and will provide the link if I can.

  2. The police investigated, and they agree. They're not incompetent. They even found dark fabric in one of the bullet holes in the wall. Mikeb, handguns aren't like Hollywood guns. One shot doesn't always put someone down right away. Why must you doubt this case? Oh, right, you hate guns and lawful gun owners.

  3. Mikeb said, "... home invaders cannot silently enter a home through "a closed and secured window."

That depends on the type of window, what tools the home invader had, how large the home is, how far away the entry window is from where the woman was, and what ambient noise in the home could have masked the home invader's actions to open the window.

The vinyl windows in my home have latches which are simply screwed into the vinyl with sheet metal screws. It wouldn't take very much force or noise to pop those screws while prying up on the window with a flat pry bar.

Cans of pepper spray for bears shoot up to 20 feet. If the woman was trying to dodge the stream of bear spray and shoot at the same time, she could have easily missed.

Dog Gone vehemently disagrees with your assertion, Mikeb. She has argued that it is never safe in any circumstance for an armed citizen to shoot at an attacker because the citizen is almost guaranteed to miss. (And thus she asserts that citizens should not be armed in public because they will fail to defend themselves and shoot bystanders.)
